IET-Bahrain Network Chairman Message :
The Bahrain IET : History from IEE Branch to an IET Local Network
The Bahrain Network of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (UK) was established way back in the year 1994. The total membership of the IET Bahrain Network is currently more than 100 members. In this sense, as far as someone can remember, under the visualization of gathering Electrical Engineers in Bahrain, the IET-Bahrain Network was established and lunched on 1994, under the name of IEE-Bahrain centre. The centre was officially opened under the patronage of the Minster of Power and Water during that time. The IEE when it was established, it has taken the Bahrain Society of Engineers (BSE) in (Manama) as location for its office. Since that time, the Network has gone through a number of stages of development in addition to large number of activities that indeed served the Electrical and Electronics engineering professional in Bahrain. Not to mention the fact, the IEE-Bahrain Network during that time have been involved and helped in organizing two conferences, 1995, and 2000 respectively, that were related to Electrical and Electronics Engineering held in Bahrain (under the name of 1st and 2nd Computer in Industry respectively). However, as Bahrain is now undergoing major development within the context of construction, highways, and other industrial development at this moment, this will rather dictate the fact that IET Bahrain Network should play a major role in terms of resolving issues related to Engineering and Technology issues that do appear from time to time to the professional bodies in Bahrain. Nevertheless, the issue of modern technology and its relation to the profession, have put a huge burden over shoulders of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, this is due to fast development that being undergoing within such fields word-wide.
When the new (IET-Bahrain Network) board was elected on the 28th of March 2006, immediately, few technical seminars have been planned and executed. Moreover, in the coming future, the (IET-Bahrain Network) is planning to make (some) of its meetings outside the (BSE) for more professional attractions, details have been shown within a submitted plan. All what can be said about seminars done lately, that they are very successful and made attractions of more members. Even, it become like a privilege for professional speakers to give a talk at the IET-Bahrain Network. By now the IET-Bahrain Network board members are determined to make this session of administration as successful as possible. There are a number of issues which may hinder successful events which are to be tackled by time. From these: effective Communication (mail) to all members, an updated database is needed. In addition, advertisings within professional local Companies and Farms. The professional society in Bahrain is not setup for that sort of activities, especially when it comes to the practitioner and technician levels. Schools and students not aware of any professional diversities, (where Faraday’s Lecture could be one way to make such an attraction and awareness). However, the (IET) members in Bahrain have the confidence related to the activities and its role. To enhance and bring such a confidence needs some time. This will be done over the coming months. T he IET Bahrain Network has been set up to serve the members of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in Bahrain, and to co-ordinate local activities with the main IET in UK. The Network has planned some local activities including industrial visits, annual sessions, younger membership drive, monthly and annual seminars, professional training and development shout courses, running Faraday’s lectures, and an organization of big events like a conference. I am sure the Network will go through a very thrill planning of its major activities to make the best of it for its values members in Bahrain. All such informative details and coming activities can be found at the Network website and also at the main IET website in UK.
Some of Activities by IET Bahrain Local Network
- Technical Programs
- To hold regular meetings on reading of papers, delivery of lectures (seminars) , presentation of demonstrations, and discussion of electrical, electronic and manufacturing engineering subjects, for the benefit of members.
- Technical Visits
To arrange visits, social meetings which give new inspiration and knowledge to our members.- Continuing Education
The IET has emphasized considerably the importance of continuing professional development. The centre has, in order to improve this area, establish a function post in charge of continuing education. Short courses will be organized drawing expertise from local industry/institution as well as from overseas.- Training
The Centre has established its Training Committee to provide support to member/companies on training scheme, requirement and carry out accreditation of training schemes.- External Affairs
There has been continuous discussion with other institutions such as the Bahrain-Branch and the IEEE to foster closer relationship in promoting learned-society activities.
